Transforming Workplace Training Through Technology

April 29th, 2025

Jason Cuskelly, VP of Business Development at Tyfoom, joined our April Risk Control Webinar to discuss how effective training and communication are essential for organizational success.

Tyfoom specializes in mobile applications that provide access to microlearning training videos, messages, forms, and documentation to help organizations and their employees do their jobs better. This approach can be especially useful for companies that place a strong value on continuously improving their risk control practices, as it allows for rapid deployment of updated safety protocols and real-time tracking of employee training compliance.

During his presentation, Cuskelly highlighted how inadequate training leads to financial losses and reduced profitability.

Statistical Impact of Training Deficiencies

Cuskelly shared the following statistics that contribute to current industry training challenges:

  • Organizations with poor onboarding processes face twice the turnover rate.
  • 59% of employees report self-teaching skills due to inadequate training.
  • 87% of millennials consider learning and development necessary.
  • 43% of managers who have been in their role for less than a year have had no training.
  • 60% of millennials want leadership training.

Considering these statistics when creating training programs will allow for improvements in training and stronger results, said Cuskelly.

Workplace Training Challenges

Cuskelly addressed several workplace challenges impacting training opportunities, including:

  • Limited time and resources.
  • Geographically dispersed workers.
  • Operational priorities that supersede training needs.
  • Skilled workforce shortages.
  • Retirement of experienced workers.

With five generations in the workplace and millennials forming the largest segment, Cuskelly emphasized that training approaches must accommodate all learning styles.

The Train, Engage, Repeat Framework

Cuskelly introduced a “Train, Engage, Repeat” methodology, stressing that organizations must improve both training quality and frequency. He noted that workers forget approximately 70% of information within one day after traditional lecture-style training and 90% within a week. By contrast, microlearning in small, digestible segments significantly improves retention.

We need to train more and train better, said Cuskelly.

Framework for Training Program Development

When it comes to creating and improving training programs, Cuskelly recommended that organizations assess the following:

  • Specific training needs
  • Available resources
  • Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
  • Preferred methods
  • Measurement tools
  • Recognition systems

Cuskelly said companies that invest $1,500 per employee annually in ineffective training programs could achieve approximately 24% more profitability.

Technology Implementation Considerations

For organizations considering technology-based solutions, Cuskelly advised evaluating implementation time, cost per user/year, and practicality for field workers. Mobile solutions typically offer quicker implementation and more searchable content.

Key Recommendations

Cuskelly concluded the webinar with recommendations on transforming training by keeping the following in mind:

  • Increase training frequency while decreasing durations.
  • Utilize blended learning models (in-person, online, and mobile).
  • Incorporate micro-video training.
  • Leverage mobile technology.
  • Implement measurement systems.
  • Recognize employee achievements.
