Useful National Safety Month Resources for Employers

By Don Talend June 26th, 2023

June is National Safety Month, a National Safety Council (NSC) initiative designed to highlight leading causes of preventable injury and death so people can live their fullest lives. For National Safety Month, the NSC is offering numerous accident prevention initiatives and free resources to heighten employees’ safety awareness at work and at home.

Captive Resources is a long-time partner of the NSC, and membership in the Council is just one of the many safety-related perks to joining one of the group captives we support. To help the NSC expand this worthwhile initiative, we’ve gathered a collection of related stats and useful resources below to give companies the tools they need to improve workplace safety this month and throughout the rest of the year.

Workplace Safety Stats

According to the most recent data available from NSC, workplace deaths due to preventable injuries, i.e., accidents, trended upward between 2020 and 2021:

  • Preventable injuries are the fourth leading cause of U.S. deaths.
  • Preventable injuries were the cause of 4,472 workplace deaths in 2021 — a 9% increase from 2020.
  • The preventable injury death rate rose from 3.0 to 3.1 per 100,000 workers from 2020–2021.
  • Of interest to member-companies operating in some of the industries most represented by Captive Resources-supported group captives: Construction, Transportation and Warehousing, and Manufacturing ranked No. 1, 2, and 5, respectively, among industry sectors in preventable fatal work injuries.

NSC partially attributes the increase in workplace deaths from preventable injuries to a 5% rise in hours worked resulting from the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. And preventable injuries have more consequences than death; they were the cause of 4.26 million work-related medically consulted injuries in 2021.

Safety Resources

Below are some of the helpful resources NSC is offering employers this month:

  • A social media kit with ready-to-use posts they can share on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram with the #NSM hashtag.
  • A printable #GoGreenforSafety sign employees can display in photos and videos as they help promote NSC’s Go Green for Safety campaign.
